Hedge fund Balyasny hired a new head of Asia ECM from BNP to replace Credit Suisse hire

Source Summary

Now seems like a pretty important time to work in ECM for a hedge fund. Several blockbuster IPOs are on the horizon and these professionals are tasked with getting their hedge fund the opportunity to invest in them and follow-on deals. Balyasny lost its Asia head of ECM earlier this year, whom it hired from Credit Suisse, but has swiftly found a replacement from a French bank. 💥Follow us on WhatsApp for news alerts. 💥 Simon Moss joined Balyasny as its head of Asia ECM based in Hong Kong. He worked at BNP for the last 12 years, spending the majority of his tenure as head of ECM syndicate. Moss also worked in RBC's Hong Kong ECM team, but started his career in Australia with stints at both ABN Amro and RBS. Adrian Lee, his predecessor, held a co-head role for ECM syndicate at Credit Suisse before joining. While all eyes are on the likes of OpenAI and Anthropic right now, Asia was the star of the IPO scene last year thanks to Hong Kong. The region raised more than $30bn in 2025 for public offerings, and had already raised $17.9bn in 2026 as of April. Obtaining pre-IPO stock when working for a hedge fund can be problematic; those funds tend to be less bullish on the prospects of the company going public and often plan to sell off their stock during the initial pop which can make the launch look less impressive. This was a concern exposed in SpaceX's recent blockbuster launch; it was reportedly 4x oversubscribed, which analysts said would actually be a troubling sign if the bulk of interest came from hedge funds.
